Goat camp big sur waterfall12/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Melanie Mabry, a close family friend of ours who is attending Cal Poly, hadn’t yet visited the park, so she drove over with a friend to join us for the morning, which made this adventure even more special! Limekiln State ParkĪdjoining the Ventana Wilderness area of the Los Padres National Forest, Limekiln State Park sits in steepest coastal canyon in the continental US, on the legendary Big Sur coastline, where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. It was also one of the coolest stops on our Big Sur Adventure. Limekiln State Park was the last park on our list before reaching in the Elephant Seal Rookery near San Simeon. We started with Garrapata State Park and worked our way down the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping at Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Most of the family-friendly hiking trails are located in the Big Sur area California State Parks, so we decided to stay at the Big Sur River Inn at the north end of the Big Sur region and work our way down Highway 1, stopping at all of the State Parks. Martin Luther King Jr.When planning our Big Sur family vacation, we did some digging to find the best kid-friendly hotel and the best family-friendly hikes in the area. Most campsites have garbage cans and a faucet with running water within a group of 3 campsites. Each campsite has a picnic table and a bear-proof storage locker. Gates close at sunset and you cannot re-enter until 8 A.M. Check in time is 3:00 P.M., check out time is 1:00 P.M. Triple Falls did not have much water, and the Old Logging Camp was a let down however there was a beautiful view overlooking the city on the Alec Canyon Trail.Ĭamping regulations/Info: 25 campsites are available each campsite accommodates up to 8 people, 2 dogs and 2 vehicles. Black Rock Falls, Basin Falls and the Upper Falls were all beautiful, and flowing, although not as well as the lower waterfall. Huge moss-covered boulders lined the creek during the hike down. The hike down to this waterfall was also magical, with a trail running along the creek and magical moss-lined trails. We had to walk around a bend and cross a stream to reach the base. It was at least 40 ft high, and it was gushing with water. My favorite waterfall was the hike down, under the bridge, via the Swanson Creek Trail to the lower waterfall. The waterfall loop was my favorite hike, with several waterfalls freely flowing around the beautiful Swanson Creek. Most of the trails are shaded, so you can visit anytime of year, but it’s great to visit after it rains to see the waterfalls in full action. Although the park is 1,133 acres, there are only 6 miles of hiking trails, so you can see the entire park in one or two days. Parking: $6 per vehicle at self-serve kiosk parking near entrance.īest time to visit: Winter is the best time to see the falls flowing after a good rain.ĭescription: This is a beautiful park with multiple waterfalls, and vibrant moss-lined trails.
